Speakers' BureauThe speakers' bureau is an important component of the Vista Irrigation District's efforts to inform and create public awareness about water quality, conservation and other water related topics. The speakers' bureau is a free service to the community. It creates a two-way dialogue between the district and the public, providing local organizations with information on current water issues, and district staff with valuable community feedback.
Listed below are some of the organizations we have made presentations to:
· Rotary Clubs
· Lions Clubs
· Community Organizations
· Neighborhood Associations
· Chambers of Commerce
· Professional Associations
If you would like us to make a presentation at your organization’s next meeting, give Public Information staff a call at (760) 597-3100. Please make arrangements at least three weeks in advance of your organization’s meeting date.

California Special District Association Scholarship ContestSince 1993, the district has been participating in the California Special District Association’s (CSDA) scholarship contest. The goal of the program is to educate high school students about the role that special districts, like the Vista Irrigation District, play in providing necessary services such as water.
The district sponsors its own contest to determine a winner to represent the district in the regional CSDA contest. The district’s winner receives a $1,000 scholarship and the opportunity to compete for another $1,000 at the regional level. Two runners-up are also selected to receive scholarships from the district.
Eligible participants must be graduating high school seniors and live or go to school within the district’s boundaries. Application materials are available in January of each year and are usually due in mid-March. Application packages may be picked up at your high school counselor’s office or the district’s office. Materials will also be made available online.
For more information about this scholarship program or to obtain application materials, please call us at (760) 597-3107.

Water Awareness Poster ContestEvery year the district, in conjunction with other North County water agencies, hosts a poster contest for fourth graders to celebrate “Water Awareness Month.” Fourth grade students in each of the North County water agencies’ service areas submit posters illustrating the importance of water. Three winners selected by the district are eligible to compete in the regional contest against winners from eleven other water agencies and to possibly have their poster appear in a Water Awareness calendar. A limited number of the calendars, displaying the artwork of district and regional winners, are available at the district office.
Every February, the district's staff visit classrooms and give presentations on the theme for the current year’s contest. Calendars and contest entry forms are distributed to fourth grade classes in the district’s service area. Entry forms are due at the end of March.

Landscape Workshops and ClassesThe district offers landscape classes for homeowners and professionals. Courses are tailored to meet
the needs of each group. However, the goal remains the same - to teach individuals how to use water more efficiently outdoors.
We offer a free one-day homeowner landscape class twice a year, in the Fall and Spring. All classes are held on Saturdays from 9:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M at the district's office located at 1391 Engineer Street in Vista. The following topics are covered: landscape design, plant identification, irrigation systems, and irrigation maintenance.
For landscape professionals, we offer a program called Protector del Agua. The program is offered free of charge and is designed to provide information that will help professionals do their job more effectively. The skills presented in the course will help professionals conserve water for their clients, and by doing so, save money.
Please call our Conservation Department at (760) 597-3160 to find out more information about the classes or to find out when the next series of classes will be held.
